A few words about us

Since 1986, when FolkTime first opened for business, we have provided socialization services for the chronic mentally ill.  We have helped this vulnerable population battle the everyday reality of isolation and the stigmatism that is inherent to having a mental illness.  In providing services for over 600 adult men and women, we have placed special emphasis on creating a caring environment that promotes human dignity, self-worth and self-sufficiency.

Currently, our services are offered at two locations in the Portland metro area.  The Couch Street program is our main location operating through the generosity of the Community of Christ Church.  Safe Haven offers programs two days per week in Oregon City.  All of the sites are operated by members who suffer from a mental illness and have stabilized their condition to the point of accepting a leadership role within FolkTime.   We are proud of our members and honor their accomplishments.

Services

In a friendly and supportive atmosphere, members focus on developing their strengths & talents, learn the skills needed to live with the daily realities of mental illness, and gain optimum independence in their lives.

FolkTime is a peer community of people in recovery, supported by a small, experienced and dedicated staff and board of directors. Volunteers and community support are an integral part of all we do.

A concept ahead of its time, FolkTime has always believed in the strength of the human spirit, and the need for friends and a meaningful place in the community as a means for recovery.

FolkTime weaves together community resources (gleaned food, donated supplies, and volunteers) and supports members in their own community outreach and volunteering as a means of regaining their place in community life.
